ExpoCiencias Sonora 2026 Brings Together 133 Scientific Projects and Selects National Representatives
The tenth edition of ExpoCiencias Sonora 2026 brought together students, teachers, and advisors from different regions of the state in a space focused on the development of scientific and technological projects.
In total, 133 projects were registered, with the participation of 355 students, 106 advisors, and representatives from 13 municipalities in Sonora.
Throughout the event, children and young people presented research, prototypes, and proposals related to sustainability, health, technological innovation, science outreach, and engineering. The 2026 edition also reflected the growth of student participation in STEAM areas within the state.
Cananea, Hermosillo, and Navojoa Lead in Participation
Cananea was the municipality with the greatest presence at ExpoCiencias Sonora, accounting for 48 registered projects. Hermosillo took second place with 27, and Navojoa third with 20 initiatives.
As for educational institutions, Preparatoria Lázaro Cárdenas topped the list of schools with the most participating projects, followed by the University of Sonora and the State University of Sonora.
The category with the highest participation was High School and Preparatory, with 59 projects, while the higher-education level gathered 50 initiatives. Meanwhile, the Science Clubs (Pandillas Científicas) category registered 23 projectsdeveloped by children and young people interested in science from an early age.
The areas with the most projects were Environment, with 35 proposals; Medicine and Health, with 20; and Engineering, with 13 initiatives.
Sonoran Projects Advance to National and International Competitions
One of the most notable moments of this edition was the selection of projects that will represent Sonora at ExpoCiencias Nacional Monterrey 2026 and at international events.
Among the standout projects is “Characterization and Thermochemical Conversion of Buffelgrass Stalk,” developed by students from the University of Sonora, which earned international accreditation to participate in ESI 2027 in Kuwait after achieving a score of 99.33.
Other selected projects included iDial from the State University of Sonora in Navojoa, ECODOT from Unilider Hermosillo, and Living Classrooms “Harvesting Learning” (Aulas Vivas “Cosechando Aprendizaje”) from Preparatoria Lázaro Cárdenas in Cananea.
Among the selected initiatives, projects focused on accessibility and technological innovation also stood out, such as “SeñIA,” a Mexican Sign Language interpreter developed by students from CBTis No. 106 in Cananea. Proposals related to mechatronics, science outreach, and the environment also took part.
During the 2026 edition, 288 evaluations were carried out with the participation of 46 specialized evaluators.
Beyond the competition, ExpoCiencias Sonora 2026 once again served as a meeting point for students interested in developing ideas, presenting projects, and engaging with science from different areas and contexts.
